31 October 2019 – Brexit deadline for the UK

Super Saturday – UK Parliament sitting

Latest news

Monday 14-10

The Queen’s speech, outlining the government’s plans for legislation, will include details of the withdrawal agreement bill, to be voted on if the EU agrees to a Brexit deal this week.

Tuesday 15-10

MPs debate the Queen’s speech, which can take up to five days before a vote is held. The chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, will meet EU ministers before the European council summit on Thursday to discuss the status regarding Brexit.

Thursday 17-10

EU summit begins in Brussels. The UK PM and his team will attend, but it may already have become clear by that point whether a deal is duable. A fourth day of debate of the Queen’s speech will he be held in the Commons.

A deal in principle has been struck between the UK and the EU, still depending on a positive vote on Super Saturday (19 October 2019) in the UK Parliament, and a subsequent positive vote from the EU Parliament.

Friday 18-10

With parliament not scheduled to sit on Friday, Thursday would be the government’s last chance to table a motion scheduling a Saturday session in the House of Commons.

The EU summit continues with Brexit talks, which is the last item on the agenda – and may turn its attention to the length of a potential extension.

Saturday 19-10

The PM will present the EU-backed Brexit deal and will set out his next steps. Under the terms of the Benn act, the PM should write a letter to the EU requesting an extension if parliament has not approved a Brexit deal by 11pm.

It is unclear whether the government will table the full withdrawal agreement implementation bill, which rebel MPs could seek to amend to bring about a referendum, or just a motion setting out the terms of the proposed deal.

Nicodem & Company - BREXIT First Aid & More

Deadline
The formal deadline of the exit of The United Kingdom from the European Union is set for 31 October 2019 at 23:00 hours GMT.

This deadline has been extended from 29 March, April 12 and 22 May 2019. If nothing else, the UK will crash out of the EU by default on 31 October 2019.

Draft Withdrawal Agreement confirmed and defeated
The EU has unanimously confirmed both the draft withdrawal agreement and the 26 pages political resolution at the special summit of EU leaders on 25 November 2018. This has been referred to ever since as “The Deal”. This deal has been defeated twice in the UK parliament by a vast majority. Now the EU has granted multiple extensions to prevent having the UK crashing out of the EU.
